Western Single Herb Tinctures

The beautiful red-brown kola nut is one of the world's most consumed foods, but few know much about it. This nut has been the inspiration of many "cola" drinks sold worldwide.

Properties:
The main active component of kola nut is the xanthine alkaloid best known as caffeine. Kola nut contains an array of antioxidants including the pigment kola red, d-catechin and l-epicatechin. Kola contains the tannins: kolatin and kolanin. It also contains betaine (a digestive aid), protein, as well as a fat-digesting enzyme.

Kola nut is thought to be a central nervous system stimulant having a noticeable affect on the human consciousness. It is reported to help when one experiences anxiety, overeating, nervous debility or general weakness. It also is reported as helpful in overcoming lazy and depressive states of mind. It is rumored to act as an aphrodisiac and for this purpose it combines well with maca, cacao as well as the herbs: damiana, oat seed and skullcap.

Overall, kola nut is considered a heart-friendly and heart-supportive food.

The Kola Tree:
The kola nut tree is a close relative of Theobroma cacao (the chocolate tree). They are both classified in the same family Sterculiaceae. The two foods go well when consumed together.

Kola nut trees grow upwards of 40 feet, bloom beautifully with yellow, white and purple flowers which upon pollination produces the famous nut used in a wide variety of culinary dishes and foods, as a spice and condiment.

Kola nut maintains strong cultural ties in West Africa as a valuable commodity where it has been used as a major item of trade since at least the 14th century. Kola nut is used in social gatherings in West African communities. Commonly, kola is chewed before meals for improved digestion and it is believed to enhance the taste of anything eaten after it.

In ancient times kola was traded for gold with the people of the Middle East, where they enjoyed it socially instead of alcohol. Currently, the sale of this product offers African wild-crafters and locals an opportunity to build financial independence and security for their communities.
